I also have great problems with literature. The first edition is in Russian so
I can only refer to the chapter - it is 5.1. In the fifth edition the
statistical entropy is introduced on pp. 123-124. But I don't have the chapters
on statistical mechanics from the fifth edition - I was only able to get the
chapters on thermodynamics. Maybe in the statistical mechanics chapters there
is some explanation of the Gibbs paradox etc. By the way, I have just received
an angry message refering to a textbook where the Gibbs paradox IS mentioned -
of course I have not checked many textbooks but someone told me that textbooks
avoid the problem and I believed him. I don't think this is very important -
what is important is 1) the essence of the paradox, 2) its solution and 3) the
way the problem is exposed in textbooks. Everything else is begging the
question.
