Dear colleagues,
For those interested in industrial ecology, I write to let you know -- or
remind you if you are already in the loop -- about the upcoming Gordon
Research Conference on Industrial Ecology (June 11-15 in central New
Hampshire, USA).
The Gordon Research Conferences
---------------------------------------------------
This conference is one of hundreds of specialized week long meetings
operated under the auspices of Gordon Research Conference (GRC)
organization. These conferences were started in 1930s by a chemist, Neil
Gordon, who felt that there were not enough opportunities to bring together
groups of scientists working at the frontier of research of a particular
area and permit them to discuss in depth all aspects of the most recent
advances. His efforts eventually led to the renowned meetings held
annually on a wide variety of topics in science and engineering. More
details on the GRC can be found at <www.grc.uri.edu>. For background and
history of the GRC, see <www.grc.uri.edu/org.htm>
Because of its goal for in-depth discussion of cutting edge work, GRC
meetings have an unusual structure:
* the meetings last five days
* attendance is limited and all participants must apply to attend and must
commit to staying for the duration of the conference
* all work presented must be new, and
* all papers and discussions are off-the-record.
The Gordon Research Conference on Industrial Ecology

The June 2000 conference on industrial ecology will be the second time
that this field has meet under the auspices of the GRC. The first was held
in the summer of 1998; the conference agenda and participant list from that
meeting is available at <http://www.grc.uri.edu/programs/1998/industri.htm>
The conference agenda for the upcoming meeting can be found at
<http://www.grc.uri.edu/programs/2000/ecology.htm> and information about
how to apply, costs, travel, etc. can be found at
<http://www.grc.uri.edu/attend.htm>.
Gordon conferences are traditionally populated by scientists and
engineers. Because of the nature of the field of industrial ecology,
social scientists are an integral part of the group that will attend this
summer's meeting. If you are interested in industrial ecology or any of
the topics that fall within its broad umbrella -- materials flow
accounting, design for environment, LCA, pollution prevention,
eco-efficiency, etc. -- I urge to you to consider attending this very
special conference.
Sincerely,
Reid Lifset
