Unless you have a large quantity of microfilm and want to hire someone
to learn the process and do that scanning, I would recommend having a vendor
do the microfilm scanning, as good scanners are quite expensive and the
expertise of service bureaus with grayscale images is now considerable. Our
162 reels of microfilm contained high-quality images, generally at 14x. We
contracted out our microfilm scanning with excellent results, getting 200dpi
(on the original) 8-bit gray images delivered on CDs. If you'd like samples

If you have relatively few film images you want to capture, the
ScreenScan system <http://www.screenscan.com/prodinfo.html> gives
surprisingly good results.
