I would add that it depends on what color depth you are using. For
manuscript or printed materials 600 dpi is indeed necessary for black and
white (1-bit) images, but if you are using greyscale (8-bit) or full color
(24-bit) you don't need that much--300 is fine, and we have used 200,
although ours are not archival/reproduction images, and they are from
microfilm. Anne Kenney's team at Cornell discusses this issue at length in
their materials (notably "Digital Imaging for Libraries and Archives").
