Jukka,
I do not know if you are aware of the research on information retrieval that is taking place at the University of Tampere in the Department of Information Studies. They might have some information that would be of interest to you for fuzzy search in the newspapers texts.

Hi!
I was just wondering if You have any plans to include fuzzy searching
algorithm to MG?
We are building an archive that will include all the newspapers published
in Finland between 1771 and 1860. Newspapers are in Finnish, Swedish and a
small minority in Russian. Material contains text in old Fractura and
modern Antikva typefaces, sometimes mixed in a single page. The newspapers
have been re-microfilmed as a part of a rescue project and they will be
digitised from those films. We use FineReader 4.0 Professional
OCR-program to read the text. We are currently evaluating Oracle 8i,
Excalibur RetrievalWare and IBM Digital Library as our database
solution. The archive will be made freely available to the general public
in the Internet by the end of this year.
I'd be very interested to hear experiences from the above mentioned
database programs or if there are some other good products with fuzzy
searching capability.
