WOMEN

> First announcement/call for papers and proposals
>
> Introduction
> Women's Worlds congress is an international interdisciplinary congress on
> women held every three years. The focus of the congress is gender
> research and interdisciplinary scholarship. The congress will provide an
> indispensable opportunity for critical reflection on the experiences and
> challenges of mainstreaming gender in the development process in several
> countries over the past decades. Further, it will facilitate
> deliberations on the most sound practices among the successful
> interventions or practical measures in addressing prevalent gender
> inequities especially on the African continent; and create momentum for a
> more concerted cross-disciplinary and multifaceted research, teaching and
> information gathering in relation to women and gender issues.
>
> Objectives
> The main objective is to take stock of gains made and assess challenges
> in women and gender focussed research and interdisciplinary scholarship
> for effective development processes.
> Specific objectives;
> To provide a forum for academic and professional exchange of information
> and ideas through lectures, papers, workshops, panel debates and informal
> discussions.
> To create public appreciation for women and gender issues and alternative
> ways of addressing them both locally and internationally
> To promote cross-cultural interaction through a wide range of cultural
> and social events.
> To provide a meeting place for grassroots activists, affirmative action
> implementers, students and established academicians, and to identify new
> areas for gender related research.
> To explore new avenues and structures that will establish platforms and
> promote women and gender issues and,
> To create a forum for networking and collaboration among gender
> specialists, academicians, institutions and organizations that work to
> promote women and gender issues in the development process both locally
> and internationally.
> Date and Venue
> The congress is being organized by the Department of Women and Gender
> studies, Makerere University and will be held between the 21st - 26th July
> 2002 at Makerere University Campus in Kampala, Uganda.
> Target Audience
> The international and interdisciplinary congress will bring together
> scholars, activists, civil society organizations, government agencies and
> other development practitioners for critical discussions on the prevalent
> gender issues both internationally but more so on the African continent,
> and their implications for this new millennium.
>
> Women's Worlds 2002 Special Focus
> The congress is organized around the main theme "Gendered Worlds: Gains
> and Challenges". This theme provides an opportunity for a broad reflection
> on the state of women and gender issues from a gendered perspective within
> the context of change. It enables discussions focused on both differences
> and similarities and offers positive pointers for future action for gender
> equity and equality. The Women's Worlds 2002 special focus areas will be
> the African perspective, young voices, gendering women and men,
> celebrating multiculturality and diversity and North - South perspectives.
> These focus areas will be reflected in the congress program themes.
>
> Congress program themes
> The following are the possible sub themes for the congress. However, these
> themes are still being discussed both locally and internationally. More
