Gareth,
How do you classify what is 'public' material and what is 'private'? Are
these terms roughly synonymous with 'marketing info' and 'intranet'? If so,
do you literally have guidelines for what constitutes both? It seems to me
that managing a website successfully depends on clear, agreed definitions
for these...it means the client-facing stuff can be shrunk and managed more
effectively...

Hi Ricky,
It is policy for us that no external companies are used for external
design work without the express permission of our department. In
some cases it may be appropriate but all requests are channelled
and managed through our department.
It is our view that there are two issues, design and content production
which can be treated separately. For design we have an online visual
identity, templates and guidelines for usage that all departments must
adhere to for all public material (we are in the process of
implementing this through all departments via an in house training
programme) - we may in cases contract an external company to produce
design material for us.
Content on the other hand should only ever be produced internally, as
one of the biggest problems is maintenance.
Regards,
Gareth
