Research Professorship in Transport Planning
The Faculty of Engineering and Science at Aalborg University, Denmark
invites applications for the position as full research professor in the
field of Transport Planning at the Department of Development and Planning.
The position is for the period 1. April 2001 to 28. March 2004. (Position
No. 50002).
The position is jointly financed by Aalborg University and the Danish
Transport Council.
The aim of the professorship is to consolidate the Department's Transport
Research Group. Research carried out by the Transport Research Group is
spanning over a wide area from policy processes and institutional issues
within the sector, through transport planning and traffic engineering, to
the design and construction of transport infrastructure. The research
focuses both on the solutions and the problems created by traffic,
transport and mobility. Traffic safety and environmental improvements by
the use of technical, planning and organisational-institutional measures
have a high priority in the Transport Research Group's field of activity.
Research on impact assessment and evaluation of policies, projects and
planning processes is also carried out by the group.
A specific research focus area is urban traffic, with a view to the growing
problems of the cities as far as environment, safety and congestion are
concerned. This requires a specific regulatory effort. The Transport
Research Group carries out research on how to operationalise the objectives
regarding environment, safety, mobility and accessibility for different
modes of transport. The research activities also address the control
measures that are appropriate for the regulation and management of urban
traffic. Methods for an overall planning of all modes of transport, with
the aim of distributing traffic areas and time given the objectives, are in
focus. Special fields of activity include planning of road and path
networks, traffic engineering - including traffic informatics - and safety
of roads.
Candidates for the position should have a doctoral degree in Transport
Planning with particular emphasis on a mathematical and engineering
approach to transport planning. Applicants should have a professional
profile with emphasis on technical planning methods and planning models.
The action area of the research professorship could be urban traffic with
emphasis on network planning, or traffic engineering preferably with
emphasis on modelling of urban traffic flows. However, other action areas
could be considered as well.
Candidates for the position are requested to submit their own proposal for
a research theme within the framework of the job description. The research
theme will be finally identified during the interviews with qualified
applicants. All applicants that are considered qualified for a
professorship will be evaluated by an expert selection committee. The
Danish Transport Council will take part in these interviews.
Special importance will be attached to the applicant's having presented a
wide range of original scientific publications at an international level,
comprising further development of the subject area. Importance will also be
attached to an assessment of the applicant's conduct of research leadership
and other management functions as well as teaching experience.
Persons who do not speak any of the Scandinavian languages are obliged to
learn to speak Danish within two years at a level where they can give
lectures and student guidance in Danish.
The teaching activities of the Transport Research Group are related to the
B.Sc. and M.Sc. study programmes in Engineering, primarily in Building &
Construction Engineering and in Planning & Environment. Supervision of
Ph.D.-students must be expected.

The annual salary for the professorship vil be app. 490.000 DKK include
pension.
