For the DETR we are carrying out a project investigating the added travel
costs to users associated with the closure of rural services, such as:
- schools
- (cottage) hospitals
- libraries
- magistrates courts
- job centres
- etc.
What would be really helpful in this study is to have access to databases of
situations where this has indeed occurred, and has been monitored. Ideally,
the database would be a georeferenced description of a before and after
study consisting of:
- users of original service
- some personal characteristics of the users (eg frequency of use)
- their travel characteristics (at least mode)
- choice by users of alternative service/facility after closure
- or alternative response (change mode, change frequency, etc.)
Is anyone aware of the existence of such before and after studies, and
whether we could get access to the basic data?
Thanks,
Tom
