CALL FOR PAPERS: TRB 2001-02-1
At the 80th Annual Meeting of Transportation Research Board in
Washington, D.C., in January of 2001, the Committee on Passenger Travel
Demand Forecasting (A1CO2) and Subcommittee on Emerging Methods and
Developments in Urban Activity and Travel Analysis (A1CO2[1]) intend to
host a session on the topic of QUANTIFYING UNCERTAINTY in travel demand
forecasts - and the incorporation of these results in decision-making.
(See topic suggestions below.)
It is hoped that multiple research teams are pursuing work in this area
and will have papers ready to submit by August 1, 2000. Please direct
any questions to any one of the session organizers: John Bowman
([log in to unmask]), Kara Kockelman ([log in to unmask]),
and John Abraham ([log in to unmask]).
We look forward to hearing about your work!
Notes:
1. Papers on the following topics are specifically encouraged:
Quantifying uncertainty in demand forecasts; propagation of uncertainty
(through interdependent models); robust transportation plans (vs.
planning for the most likely future); identifying critical intervention
times and places; communicating probability and risk to decision makers
and the public; planning in the face of chaos and complexity;
identifying a representative set of possible futures; appreciating
large-consequence/low-probability scenarios; communicating and modeling
the concept of 'short-term pain for potential long-term gain'; analyzing
the speculative behavior of developers and land owners.
2. Submission of complete papers, written to TRB standards and format,
is preferred. Formal papers should be received at TRB offices no later
than August 1, 2000. On the TRB submission form (available at
http://www.nas.edu/trb), please indicate this call for papers (number
20-02-2), and direct the paper to James Scott, TRB Senior Program
Officer, Transportation Research Board, 2101 Constitution Avenue, N.W.,
Washington, D.C. 20418. Also submit your paper abstract to the session
organizers - along with a note that you have submitted the paper to TRB.
3. Abstracts of work in progress will be considered for presentation and
should be directed by August 1, 1999 to the session organizers.
