Exhibition Announcement:
»La Specola -anatomy in wax« in contrast to images of modern medicine
Date: 14 September until 19 November 2000 at the Deutsches Museum Bonn
Dare to have a look into the interior of a human body! In connection with
the Bonn scientific summer 2000 the Deutsches Museum Bonn brings the
anatomic wax models from the Florentine museum »La Specola« to Bonn. An
exhibition from 14 September until 19 November 2000 puts the masterpieces of
the art of anatomy, made around 1800, opposite modern processes of forming
images in medicine. The Florentine zero sculptures served from the beginning
on as demonstration models for the scientific-anatomical lesson. They
offered the advantage, that in their three-dimensionality they came far
closer to original preparations than images in books. They should have made
autopsies, the cutting up of a body, unnecessary. Until the end of the 19th
century this was the only mean to look under the skin of a human.
Spectacular views into a living human body were opened with the development
of processes of forming images. This began 1895 with the discovery of the
x-rays. Since using computer technology it has progressed enormously. The
Deutsches Museum Bonn confronts the views of the body in the early 19th
century with the modern medical image forming of the 20th century.
We look forward to your visit.
