Healing Science: Pharmacy past, Pharmacy future
A special exhibition running through 2000 - 2001
In 1000AD doctors believed that human health depended on controlling the
body's four fluid 'humours' by regular bloodletting and purifying drugs.
The theory was challenged in the 16th century when Swiss born doctor
Paracelsus declared the human body a 'chemical laboratory'. It is a
laboratory in which our doctors and pharmacists have been conducting
clinical experiments ever since.
This exhibition looks at the radical impact of each new discovery in the
'healing science' of medicine, from the discovery of bacteria to mapping the
human genome.
Special events August 2000 - May 2001
Saturday 23rd September 2000, 1-5pm
The Society throws open its fine 1970s HQ building for architectural tours
as part of London Open House Weekend. No need to book.

Special temporary exhibition: The Quack Doctor
This temporary exhibition draws on the museum's important collection of late
18th and early 19th century caricatures with a medical theme. James Gillray
and Thomas Rowlandson are among the artists whose graphic satires highlight
a period of ferocious rivalry in the 'medical market place'. Physicians and
apothecaries preen and squabble while patients fall prey to a to a teaming
fringe of 'man-midwives', herbalists, corn-cutters, tooth-drawers and patent
medicine sellers.
>From 5th March - 25th May 2001
Special temporary exhibition: Biomedical Image Awards
These outstanding contemporary biomedical images from the Wellcome Trust
Medical Photographic Library show an exciting variety of photographic and
electronic imaging techniques.
