Dear Colleagues,
Dr Philip Wilson, a member of the GIRES Medical Research Panel, together with
Clare Sharp and Susan Carr, published figures on the incidence of gender
dysphoria in the British Journal of General Practice, December 1999 issue.
Based on a questionnaire sent to all general practices in Scotland, with a
73% response rate, they found an incidence, among patients aged over 15
years, of 8.18% per 100,000. Male to female cases represented 80%, female to
male 20%, of the total.
The data for these gender dysphoric patients also showed:
Not in treatment, 24%
Receiving psychological/counselling treatment only, 17%
Receiving hormone therapy but pre-operative, 24%
Post operative, 35%
More than one-third of the cases had presented to practices within the
preceeding 12 months. This may reflect inceasing social acceptance of the
condition.
The survey was conducted in April 1998. TIt seems worthwhile to repeat the
research, perhaps next year, to measure how the situation has evolved.
With kind regards. Bernard Reed, Chairperson, GIRES.
