Some years ago I was doing some research into sub conscious gender schema
processing in ts people and as part of that I wanted to find suicide rates
pre and post op for the UK but I am afraid I failed miserably and ended up
using some figures from the US.
I think there are a number of reasons for this, firstly if a goverment or
health service doesn't collect data on a problem, when asked it can say,
"Problem, what problem"?
Any figures pre / post op rely on the person being formally treated (and
in a consistent manner) for the condition for them to be both meaningful
and often for the stats to be collected. We all know how abysmal the
medical situation is in this country (UK).
Pre-diagnosis - well collecting that would be incredibly difficult unless
the person leaves some kind of note or otherwise declares why they are
killing themselves and even then such a note would only get passed to a
coroner (who would usually surpress the contents of a note to avoid
further distress to family / friends).
If you want information the Samaritans hold contact me off the list and I
will get it for you, but bear in mind that the figures aren't actually
that helpful if you want to do a comparison because by definition the sams
(Samaritans) figures for suicide rates already include those who choose to
kill themselves due to dealing with transsexualism.
