Dear Colleague,
Inadvertently, I sent my previous email in incomplete form. Its concluding
paragraphs should have been as follows:
The members of the GIRES Medical Research Panel all have direct experience of
medical practice in the gender identity and intersex fields. In these
fields, they are regarded as authorities and provide expert evidence in legal
cases, speak at professional conferences and serve in senior capacities
within a range of prestigious organisations.
Whenever any group of people striving for their proper rights sees others who
have such power and influence to help or hinder their cause, they have the
choice of trying to bring them into their own camp or leaving them to remain
neutral or even side with others. Within the camp there can be dialogue that
changes views, establishes a consensus and agrees a united attack.
So let's remind ourselves that there is a large world outside the trans
community's camp that mainly consists of people who are unsupportive or even
hostile. Let's bring within the camp all those we need to be our allies,
including the members of the GIRES Medical Research Panel. Let's resolve our
differences and agree our own strategy factually and reasonably. Let's not
allow misinformation to distort our debate. Let's not allow our debate to
degenerate into fighting among ourselves. Let's concentrate our attacks on
those who are our real enemies.
If there are issues you wish to discuss with the GIRES Medical Research
Panel, please email them to me. I cannot promise you an immediate answer.
Our focus at the moment is on changing the proposed policy of a British
Health Authority which intends to place totally unacceptable restrictions on
the funding of gender confirmation treatment for the trans people who live
within its area. That would set a really damaging precedent which over 100
other Health Authorities in this country might then be under pressure to
follow. It is through this kind of work that the GIRES Medical Research
Panel can make a highly significant contribution towards improving the lives
of those we serve.
With kind regards and best wishes. Bernard Reed, Chairperson, GIRES.
