i am seeking some assistance:
one of persons i see in counseling is a female-to-male transgender
person who is a long-term member of the United States Army. in our last
session, this person stated that ze would like presently to begin a
doctor-supervised hormone regimen. additionally, this person would like
to prepare for future breast-removal surgery. at this time, this person
is not stating a desire for phalloplasty or other genital surgery.
this person is apprehensive about beginning hormones and planning for
surgery because of hir status as an active member of the Army. ze is
unsure of Army policy regarding several specific issues:
1) can and will the Army restrict this person's use of
doctor-prescribed medication?
2) in what way(s) does the Army classify gender status (e.g.,
genitalia, chromosomes, birth certificate status)?
3) how are trans persons treated vis a vis the current "don't ask,
don't tell" policy?
additionally, does anyone know of other trans persons in the armed
services and, if so, would it be possible to share any contact
information?
peace,
jane heenan
