Dear Colleagues,
An article by Margaret Wente appeared in the Focus Column of the Globe and
Mail. It concerns the well know "John/Joan" case.
How David found his manhood After a botched circumcision, doctors
tried to turn the Winnipegger into a girl. He has spent years
reversing the damage.
The article contains the following information about Dr Paul McHugh of Johns
Hopkins Hospital:
Dr. Money's revolutionary gender-reassignment clinic at Johns Hopkins
is long gone. It was shut down in 1975 by his successor, a
blunt-talking psychiatrist named Paul McHugh.
Dr. McHugh regards gender-reassignment surgery as the most radically
misguided and damaging therapy since the frontal lobotomy. "The body
is not like a suit of clothes, to be hemmed and stitched to the style
of the times," he said.

Margaret Wente may be reached by e-mail at [log in to unmask] and
her columns appear every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. David Roberts
is Manitoba and Saskatchewan bureau chief of The Globe and Mail and
conducted David Reimer's first newspaper interview. I do not know Dr
McHugh's email address.
If Dr McHugh has been correctly quoted, he needs educating.
With warmest regards. Bernard Reed, Chairperson, GIRES.
