The endocrinologist Harry Benjamin said that he first attempted to induce
breast growth in a male patient by means of female hormones in the 1920s.
Dr. Gohrbandt, Director of the Surgical Clinic of the Urban Hospital in
Berlin is believed to have performed the first modern, complete, male to
female gender reassignment surgery in 1931. Also in 1931 Dr. Felix Abraham
who worked at the Institute for Sexology in Berlin, Germany published the
first article on Gender Reassignment Surgery; "Genital Reassignment of Two
Male Transvestites", describing Dr Gohrbandt's surgery.
The first autobiography of a transsexual woman who underwent 'sex change'
surgery was that of Danish painter Lili Elbe (formerly Einar Wegener) in
1931 with Dr. Gohrbandt. She died of complications from the surgical
procedures to form a new vagina within a year. Her biography 'Man into
Woman', edited by Nils Hoyer, was published in 1933.
