Having followed the last 6 emails on this issue, I am saddened by the level
of this debate.
May I remind you all, and particularly Suzan, that;
- the issue is not punishment (even if killers are on death row that doesn't
help the victim),
- an invocation of a '98% of the time rule' (apparently unknown to a number
of us in this list) is not a valid academic defence,
- automatically associating T* people with sex workers, even if it was meant
indirectly, is fallacious, somewhat offensive, and (perhaps) falling into
the same mind-set as the perpetrators of the violence,
- the issue is SAFETY, Petra's survey in particular, and T* people's safety
in general (am I wrong to assume the generality, Petra?).
Katherine's example of her friend who was attacked by 'security' guards (how
ironic!) while crossing HER OWN campus is at the heart of the issue - let's
continue from that starting point. I am particularly interested because the
NE of England, where I lecture, is not renowned for it's tolerance of
anything other than hard, macho stereotypes. Can you give us an update on
the issue, Katherine?
Final point:
I am interested to know if anyone else on this mailing list perhaps thinks,
as I do, that the issue of T* safety is connected to (but obviously not
wholly dependent upon) the ever-present need for teaching and encouragement
of respect for ALL people, and not just particular groups. "Identifying
particular groups for action sometimes CREATES targets - discuss."
