Dear Colleague,
The debate about GIRES' Medical Research Panel has drifted into other issues.
I agree that all of this is now better discussed elsewhere and should not
clog up the main Transacademic communication process.
I do not participate in the Transacademic Forum, so I could not take part in
any further debate there. However, if you wish individually to put any points
directly to me via email, I will be very pleased to deal with them.
You may, in concluding this phase of the debate, wish to see the following
message to Mairi McDonald from GIRES' Editor who has kindly agreed that I may
share it with you.

Dear Mairi
I am associated with GIRES and was saddened to read your posting which
seems designed to discredit it and the work it does on our behalf. I have
forwarded your post to GIRES Chairman, Bernard Reed, as he is much better
qualified to answer the points you raise than I am.
Of course the Medical Research Panel is composed of non-trans people. I
will be very pleased if the day comes when the most influential doctors
specialising in trans issues are themselves trans. Until then we have to
live in the real world and accept that, currently, those specialists are
non-trans. This panel includes several of the most prominent doctors
currently practising in the field. I think it is a credit to GIRES that they
have agreed to work with the charity. Having such prominent doctors helps to
give GIRES further credibility in the eyes of those it seeks to influence,
such as Health Authorities and government departments.
I don't know you, and don't know if you have been a patient of Professor
Green's at any time. I have, and I can assure you that I have no complaints
about him. I have also been a patient of Dr Russell Reid and Mr Michael Royle
- if these doctors are not medical 'experts', who, in your opinion, is?
Did you observe that the Executive Committee of the charity is composed of
PFC activists, that most of them and the officers are trans, that
StephenWhittle (who's list you are posting on) is on the Social Research
Panel. All these people are working together for a charity set up to work
for our benefit! Would you rather that such groups didn't exist?
Yours, frustrated, but in friendship!
Christine Hood

I look forward to hearing directly from anyone who wishes to pursue this
further.
With kind regards. Bernard Reed.
