Belief Systems and the Place of
                               Desire

Study of Sex, Culture and Society

               Melbourne, Australia, 1-3 October 2001

ORGANIZATION

The 2001 conference of the International Association for the Study of
Sexuality Culture and Society (IASSCS) will be held in Melbourne
from 1-3 October, immediately prior to the HIV/AIDS in Asia and the
Pacific Conference. The Australasian Society for HIV Medicine will
also be meeting in Melbourne at this time.

The conference is being convened by Professor Lenore Manderson,
Director of the Key Centre for Women's Health in Society, The
University of Melbourne, with Linda Bennett, Mridula Bandyophadyay
and Milica Markovic.

The international steering committee includes: Professor Gilbert
Herdt, San Francisco State University, USA, Dr Gail Hawkes,
Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, Dr Graham Reid, University
of Witswaterstrand, South Africa, Professor Jayashree
Ramakrishna, National Institute of Mental Health, Bangalore, India,
Dr Pilar Ramos-Jimenez, de la Salle University, The Philippines, Dr
Peter Aggleton, University of London, UK, Dr Carole S.Vance,
Columbia University, USA, Dr Stacy Pigg, Simon Fraser University,
Canada, Professor Philippe Bourgois, University of California, San
Francisco, USA, and Professor Margaret Jolly, Australian National
University, Australia.

PROGRAM DETAILS

The theme of the meeting is Belief Systems and the Place
of Desire. This can be interpreted freely, but we encourage
participants to consider how dominant religions and
ideologies influence desire and dominant sexual
structures, and how alternatives and resistances are
worked through and appropriated …

This theme will provide the focus of certain key
presentations and centre discussion on an area that
presents theoretical and empirical challenges. Panels will
not be limited to this topic, however.

We plan plenary sessions at the start and conclusion of each day, but
the emphasis of the conference will be on the brief presentations of
papers, commentary by discussants, and focused open discussion.
Participants may be involved in multiple ways: in the submission and
presentation of papers, in chairing sessions, displaying posters, and as
discussants.

PARTICIPATION

To assist us with planning, potential participants are invited
to submit expressions of interest as soon as possible. The
time line is as follows:

Papertitles and panel names - 28 February
Deadlinefor abstracts of panels, papers and
posters (c.100 words) - 31 May
Closingdate for presenters and early bird
registration - 30 June
Conferencedates 1-3 October 2000.

VENUE

The conference will be held at the University of Melbourne,
an easy walk or short tram ride from the centre of the city.
Limited simple accommodation is available. There is also a
wide range of hotels in the area, from Backpaper Hotels to 5-
star. We anticipate good hotel accommodation will cost
around US$60 per night, $65-80 for a twin room). The
University and local accommodation are situated in Carlton,
which is renowned for its fine coffee, good bookshops and
Italian restaurants. Melbourne is “food-and-culture” capital of
the country.

Weather in early October will probably be mild (c.13-15o
min., 20-23o max. Celsius), although it can be variable and
you need to allow for either hot or cold, wet or dry. Check
your weather network before departure. It is an ideal time of
year for tourism, however - warm enough in the south, not
too hot and wet in the north - and you may want to plan
extra time to take advantage of being here. International
flights can be made with connections from Melbourne to
other major cities or tourist destinations.

REGISTRATION

Registration fees will be AUD $300 (US$200) for 3 days
(AUD $150 concessions).

if you would like us to place you on a mailing list now,
then we ask you to return the following tear-off to linda
bennett, key centre for women’s health in society, the
university of melbourne, carlton, victoria, 3010. YOU
MAY ALSO E-MAIL YOUR INTEREST TO HER AT
