hello, this is my first message to this list, if i'm doing anything wrong
let me know! my names tina, i'm a student in toronto canada, in the
"assaulted women's and children advocate, counselor" program at George Brown
college. my main reason for joining this site is because there is a huge
lack of knowledge in the toronto/ ontario shelter and hostel system around
transgendered people especially actual writen matterial. a large number of
shelters don't even have policy around weather they can even admit
trangendered people leaving abusive relationships. i myself do not identify
as transgendered. But i have seen/heard situations were people/
organizations ignorance and lack of policy ment that a trangendered person
was refused admitance to a shelter when they really needed to be there. I'm
looking to compile information for school and for my placement (i work in a
women's hostel as part of school)on policy pertaining to transgendered
people in the shelter/ hostel system, stratagies for making this housing
safe for the transgendered, info on other resources, on the web, books,
organizations etc. As well, if there is anyone who has had any personal
experience with the shelter/ hostel system, and is comfortable sharing the
good and bad about that experience it would be the best information i could
get to suggest improvements and changes to how things are done in Toronto.
i can be reached at [log in to unmask] feel free to pass on my
address if you know of anyone who wouldn't mind sending me info or
suggestions pertaining to trans people in the shelter system.
thank you, tina wilson
