Dear Neil and Nancie,
You both raise interesting issues. There are a few inspiring studies out
there that address some of these issues. I'll be brief, as I have just
moved and have many boxes to unpack. I'd recommend that you consult
Ryan Bishop and Robinson's _Night Market_, for an insightful study
of sex tourism in Thailand. They address gender issues and the
politics of sex tourism and include in-depth interviews. Cynthia Enloe's
chapter on sexism and tourism in her _Bananas, beaches and Bases_ is also
good at addressing genderized imagery in tourism and the gendered politics
of tourism (I regularly assign this chapter in my anthro of tourism
classses and it makes an impression on undergraduate students). Margaret
Swain has done some early pioneering writing on gender and tourism, as
well, which I am sure everyone on this list knows about. Dahles and Bras
have published some interesting pieces on female entrepreneurs in Bali--I
think their latest piece appeared in ATR. Also, Shinji Yamashinta
(anthropologist at Tokyo University) has made a little-known but
fascinating film on the Japanese women tourists who marry Balinese men--it
chronicles their experiences and reasons for pursuing such
romances. Unfortunately, it is in Japanese, though I have encouraged him
to translate it for American academic markets. I'd love to hear
recommendations from others.
All the best,
Kathleen
