Dear Colleague,

"Africa e Mediterraneo", a journal from Lai -momo Editore, Bologna, Italy,
is pleased to announce the publication of Volume 28 “La ville africaine,
the african town”.

Guest Editor: Massimo Repetti.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
Volume 28 contains the following articles:

CONTENTS/SOMMAIRE

Le spectre de la ville nue
Michel Agier
Michel Agier meditate on the “end of the city” (announced by management
policies and urban representations) and, moving from african cases, shows
that the fragmentation of the city life produces social segregations and
new spatial patterns. The African citizen moves between urban spaces,
reinventing his town by means of social relations and space occupations, in
order to realize survival strategies.

Le migrant africain et la ville étrangère
Sylvie Bredéloup
The African migrants buildings new forms of citizenship and urban
settlement. The structure of mutual aid created by senegalese Mouride
migrants in African, American and European cities prevents social tensions
and improve the efficency of their economic network. The links established
between the communities and the cities represent an alternative to the
governement policies

Lire la ville à murs ouverts: graffitis et murs peints de la nouvelle
Afrique du Sud
Élisabeth Deliry Antheaume
The effusion of signs and artistic expressions that appear on the walls of
South Africa cities are an indication of the process of reconstruction of
space and identities. The article plots the journey of discovery of the
author who acted as a contemporary archeologist between 1995 and 1998.
Walls bear the tensions of the past and the aspirations of today. Citizens
and artists choose “art response” over armed response.

Entre rebellion, violence et séduction: les "matatu" de Nairobi.
François Grignon
Moving from a survey on the public transport management in Nairobi - a
highly politicized sector- the author presents an ethnic contrast and a
political struggle. For the kikuyo owners, the decoration of their cab
"matatu" symbolize the resistence against the rule imposed the Government.

Segnare la città
Massimo Repetti
The inhabitants of Dakar write their history in the urban space by means of
a “topographical writing” based on elements of the urban landscape. They
build and preserve a relation of identity with the district through mural
paintings, oral traditions en aggregative performances (“navetanes”).

Banking on the local people: ENDA-Ethiopia's activities in Addis Ababa
Camille de Stoop and the staff of Enda-Ethiopia
How does a city where 60% of the residents are categorised in the
low-income bracket avoid total collapse? Somewhere it must contain
resources of inventiveness, energy and resilience that compensate for the
lack of financial means. It is these capacities Enda (an international
non-profit-making association) seeks to promote in Addis Ababa, in order to
enable communities to improve their living.

Offres de soins dans les villes africaines
Marc-Éric Gruénais
In Brazzaville, as well as in many cities of central Africa, the overlap of
health structures and less formal therapeutic resources (medical private
studies, traditional healers and religious healers) invent a complex
sanitary system. The Citizens insert every resource in their social and
political strategies, and their search of new therapies guarantees the
success of every practitioner

Farmacies en ville, farmacies “par terre”
Yannick Jaffré
The analysis of medical treatment in the urban context is also the analysis
of the market of pharmaceutical products. In Bamako, where the city allows
free play to forces of supply and demand, the supply of “cultural friendly”
pharmaceutical products in the “informal” economy reveals the existence of
a popular knowledge concerning illness, therapies and pharmaceutical products.

Interview with Mohamed Aden Sheikh, former Health Minister of Somalia
The health policy of the Somali gouvernement in the early ‘70 was an
innovative experience, with important social and cultural aspects.
(The interview is in italian)
