Thanks, Nigel, for including directions for your media.
I mostly have used variations of Hoyer's -- there are many. The one I have
used in the past is in the monograph (Faure's). More recently, I have used
one from Krantz's "A Manual of Acarology". Of course, like everyone else,
he simply calls it Hoyer's medium. The recipe for it is:
Distilled water 50 grams
Gum arabic (crystals) 30 grams
Chloral hydrate 200 grams
Glycercine 20 grams
His directions are, essentially, add ingredients in order, dissolving as you
go. Filter before use.
It works well, but I am always looking for something better (i.e., provides
better contrast under phase).
I used one formula of polyvinyl lactophenol medium years ago and quit using
it. I think it was because a few slides would crystallize.
