To expand a little:
The VY.pinfo struct contains (in the case of analyze images) a scalefactor to
multiply the raw image numbers by to get the correct value:

This VY.pinfo scaling is the same as the analyze header scalefactor, when the
images are first spm_vol'ed into SPM. By adjusting this scalefactor in the
VY.pinfo field, all the voxels in the brain are scaled, because, when the data
is read into matlab, using spm_sample_vol, or spm_slice_vol, the raw image
numbers are multiplied by the scale factor in the VY.pinfo field in the c code,
before the values are returned to matlab: e.g.
