Dear Daniel,
The error message is helpful - I think it suggests that the problem is not
with your design matrix or configuration, but with one of the image
volumes. SPM is unable to open one of the image volumes, and is crashing
as a consequence.
I would check that you can display the first image volume in the time
series using the 'display' button. Check that read & write permissions are
set correctly for all the image volumes, and the directories they are
contained within. If all of these are OK then a bit more detective work is
needed to discover which (one or several) of the images are messed up. The
quickest way is probably to make a movie of the image volumes (spm_movie.m
may not be in your distribution but is archived at
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/spm/1999-10/0169.html).
best wishes,
Geraint
