Dear Paul:
Our group has reported on using the Applied Science Laboratories
(781-275-4000, [log in to unmask]) infrared eye tracker (model 5000 with
long range optics), see Neuroimage 11:58-65, 2000.
As with all infrared trackers it has limited temporal and spatial
resolution, but it works. It's operation neither seems to affect nor
is affected by the scanner. The avotec system noted by Jose' looks
quite nice in principle, but I don't know if it's ready for
production yet (the company has taken several years to put this
together). My understanding is also that it also may be quite
expensive ($80,000 including avotec's goggles vs. $40,000 for the ASL
equipment). Other choices include the Permobil system (in use by MGH,
sol aisenberg markets this). This system uses infrared diodes on
goggles that fit just in front of the subject's eye's. It works well
but you lose any signal from the frontal lobes. Iscan also makes an
infrared tracker, but I'm not sure that the centers that bought it
ever got it to work satisfactorily. There are also shielded EOG
devices based on article by Felblinger et al. but the signal can be
inconsistent and it certainly doesn't provide the spatial resolution
of even the infrared trackers.
Eye tracking is a messy business (worse in the scanner). If you need
something now (i.e., in less than 6 months) the ASL system works, but
it's not perfect.
regards,
Darren
