Dear Jon,
if you want to use millions of colours you have to tell the X server to
run in 32bit mode. You can do this by inserting a line
Depth 32
in the appropriate "Screen" section of /etc/XF86config. I am not sure, but
I think XF86Setup or SaX will allow you to adjust this value in the
configuration screen too, in case you hesitate editing XF86config
manually.
