Dear Karl, Richard et al.,
thanks for the comments. The core objectives of the paradigm are to
replicate faces vs. buildings and emotions vs. each other. Additionally,
conjunctions of emotions vs. buildings are targetted and gender as a
factor shall be looked at. In particular, the interaction of gender and
emotion might be interesting but I doubt I will get anywhere with the 16
trials on each gender per emotion. I am aware of the issue of
confounding interactions for any conjunctions resting on main effects
for faces of particular emotions vs. buildings. What are peoples
thoughts on that? How to select a "null event" for the entire plot?
BTW, I am not going for faces + buildings vs. the reading task which is
just to īrefocusī attention. To differentiate between semantics and
recognition seems indeed a tough one to me, and I do share concerns
about overidentifying the fusiform area as encoding 'face-ness'. It is
not just differential semantic processing which should set in later. I
guess I am still in favor of E.K. Warrington's thoughts: visual analysis
(including shape dicrimination) forms the structural percept in visual
cortex with no lateralization. Post-sensory perceptual / apperceptive
categorization sets in presemantically, and I would like to see it
lateralized to right parieto-occipital regions. Semantic / associative
categorization I'd like to see rather left-winged but I don't mean to
evoke the related controversies. Personally, I am in favor of epoch
related designs if possible but the nice part would be to take the
EKP-design over into the scanner...
Warm regards-
andreas
