I have also found that the latest version of MEDAL can only read 16-bit
integer Analyze data. Seeing Reza's rapid improvements to his program, I
am sure that MEDAL will soon support a broader range of data types. As an
intermediate workaround, you could try converting your images to 16-bit
Analyze using my MRIcro software. MRIcro runs on Windows, so you do not
have to switch operating systems. To convert an image, open the image in
MRIcro and select 'Save as rotated/clipped'. A new window will appear
where you can select the output to be 16-bit data. MEDAL reads either Big
or Little Endian (Sun or Intel) formats:

p.s. MRIcro can also batch convert DICOM, NEMA and Genesis datasets to
SPM-friendly Analyze format.
