This just to heartily agree with both of your points - I've found SPM batch
mode heavy on required expertise, and extremely useful.
As you say in the documentation (spm_bch.man), the best way to get started is
with some examples. I've compiled the files I've been using for a straight
through analysis of some FMRI block data in case someone finds them useful:

They in turn were based on the examples in the SPM batch directory.
Not to say that a straight through analysis is a good idea, incidentally...
