DIRECTOR
UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT
CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION
The University of Connecticut has created a new position in its Center for
Science and Technology Commercialization for a Director, responsible for
inventions in the Physical Sciences. The Center is responsible for the
identification, evaluation, intellectual property protection, marketing,
and licensing of the University's intellectual property. The Center also
licenses University technology as the basis for the formation of new
companies. The new Director will manage these activities as they apply to
inventions involving engineering, chemistry, materials science, physics,
and other related fields. The Director will report to the Executive
Director.
The successful candidate will interact with faculty on all of the
University's campuses to assess the commercial potential of inventions
already presented to the Center, and to identify promising technologies in
their earliest stages before they have been presented to the Center. The
Director will then recommend an appropriate patenting strategy, identify
suitable commercial partners based on his or her network of industrial
contacts, negotiate deals, and draft appropriate contracts.
The successful candidate must have an advanced degree in one of the
Physical Sciences or Engineering, and a minimum of five years relevant
industrial experience. He or she must be familiar with the assessment of
early stage technologies, negotiating and drafting licenses, and
appropriate aspects of intellectual property law. Knowledge of new company
formation is a plus. The Director must be able to communicate effectively
with university investigators as well as industrial representatives, and be
familiar with tracking project activities electronically.
The University of Connecticut's main campus is located in Storrs, CT,
approximately 25 miles east of Hartford. The University of Connecticut
Health Center and the Center for Science and Technology Commercialization
is in Farmington, CT, approximately 5 miles west of Hartford. Research
campuses are also located at Avery Point, and in Stamford. The University
receives approximately $120M in research support annually, and files 25-50
patent applications per year.
