FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
COLLABORATIVE OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPY
MICROMANIPULATION AND IMAGING CENTRE
2 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWS
A new Collaborative Optical Spectroscopy, Micromanipulation
and Imaging Centre (COSMIC) is being set up, with funding
£1.87M from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, as
a cross-disciplinary facility for advanced characterisation,
visualisation and control of materials at the molecular level, with
a strong emphasis on research at the interface between the
physical and life sciences. Core staff at COSMIC are drawn
from the Departments of Physics & Astronomy (Profs. W. C. K
Poon and P. N. Pusey, Dr. J.Crain), Chemistry (Prof.
A.Harrison, Drs. A. C. Jones, and D.T.F. Dryden) and the
Institute of Cell and Molecular Biology (Prof. A. J. Trewavas
and Dr. N. D.Read). The facility is based on a number of
ultrafast and CW laser systems which deliver light to a suite of
spectrometers and microscopes.
You should have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
ultrafast lasers, time-resolved spectroscopy, time-correlated
single photon counting, laser tweezers and advanced optical
microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence lifetime
imaging, single molecule spectroscopy. You (with dedicated
technical support) will be responsible for commissioning, day-to-
day running and development of several new experimental
systems and will participate in one or more of the research
programmes being pursued, such as time-resolved spectroscopy
of condensed systems, assisted assembly of colloidal structures
and the study of biomolecules and living cells.
