UNIVERSITY OF DUBLIN
TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN
DUBLIN 2, IRELAND
DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
MPhil in Ethnic and Racial Studies
There are a few places still left for the 12-months postgraduate degree
MPhil in Ethnic and Racial Studies for the academic year 2000-1.
Ireland, where ethnic conflicts north and south, and the transition from
being an emigration society to being a destination of in-migration, is
ideally suited for such a programme, the only one of its kind in the country.
The programme consists of;
two one-year core courses - a course in the theories of 'race' and
ethnicity, and a course in research methods;
seven one-term courses: Migration and population movement, Human rights and
international issues, Language, ethnicity and expressive culture, Managing
cultural diversity: language and society in Ireland, Gender and ethnicity,
Reading 'race', and Culture, colonialism and Irishness;
plus a 15,000-20,000 words dissertation.
Students are encouraged to develop their areas of interest through course
and dissertation work. The programme also offers a series of guest seminars
and lectures.
Applicants should have a good first degree in the social sciences. The
programme is also ideally suited to public and voluntary sector workers.
Our graduates are well placed in the Garda Siochana (Irish police), the
Asylum section of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law reform and
have contributed to research work in Pavee Point Traveller Centre and Clann
Housing Association and are working abroad in various functions. Several
graduates are continuing their doctoral studies.
