Dear Colleagues I am very pleased to announce the formation of the
Nottingham Centre for Pavement Engineering which is a joint venture
between my Division of Pavement and Geotechnical Engineering at the
University of Nottingham (UK) and the Shell organisation.
The arrangements we are concluding will allow us to put up a £2.3m
building to accommodate all our research facilities and those of our
friends from Shell. This facility is due to be completed by April 2001. The
building will be formally part of the University and will accommodate all
the academic research and technical staff within my team, together with a
small number of people from Shell who will be transferred from their
present R & D laboratory near Chester, England and some new appointments.
The management and running of the laboratory will be arranged in such a
way that confidentiality and independence is preserved allowing the
University's research to thrive while Shell support their company needs
and those of their customers. Blind testing of material specimens by
technicians will be a feature of this. The laboratory will also be
expected to attract work from other organisations.
Regards
Steve
