From Nigel Sanitt:
I am starting an on-line journal/forum which aims to promote debate on
scientific and philosophical issues of current importance. (The Pantaneto
Forum - www.pantaneto.co.uk <http://www.pantaneto.co.uk> ). I wonder if you
could please pass this on to any parties you think may want to contribute.
My background is in the physical sciences but the aim of the journal is to
be multidisciplinary.
A large part of the problem scientists have with the "Public understanding
of Science", is the "Scientist's understanding of the Public". This covers
not only communication with the media, government and other sections of the
Public, but also communication with other scientists. I hope that the Forum
will explore these issues and address the following kinds of questions: What
kind of improvements are needed in the training of scientists?; Can
philosophy courses help?; Is enough thought given to "critical thinking"
skills?; Can scientists explain their work and ideas effectively to
non-scientists (and sometimes even to other scientists)?; Can scientists
develop the the kind of "public language" that can communicate science in a
way which is accurate, understandable to the layman, and sets science
squarely within the broad cultural framework of society? I could go on, but
I hope this gives you some idea of the flavour of the enterprise!
Kindest Regards,
Nigel Sanitt
