Ray,
In March 1997 the Wellcome Trust's Consultation & Education department
organised a deliberative poll on the subject of genetics called 'The People
Decide'. The event had a number of objectives:
To increase public awareness of genetics research and the issues raised;
To increase 'decision makers' on possible regulative and legislative
options.
The event was organised into two debates: 'Genetic Choices' and 'How far
should genetics research go ?'. Each session included some background
information from a subject 'expert' followed by position statements from two
people from particular points of view. The bulk of the sessions were given
over to members of the public who had been recruited to attend the event. In
order that participants came to the debate with some basic knowledge of
genetics a short booklet was designed to give basic biological information
in the simplest possible way.
The Trust also carried out a public consultation on cloning which was
published in December 1998. The report is available as a PDF at

If you, or any one else, on the list would like copies of the reports for
both of these events, please contact Ruth Birse

In addition to in-house projects the Trust has funded reaseach into young
people's understanding of human genetics, carried out by the Jenny Lewis et
al, at the department of science education at Leeds. Further details at
