The National Student Music Awards returns this year with backing from
activate.co.uk and the organisers of The Brit Awards, the British
Phonographic Industry. The Arts Council, the Performing Rights Society and
the Musicians’ Union are also among the established organisations supporting
NSMA 2001.

The Event
The NSMA was set up last year to bring opportunity to student musicians to
compete and perform at a local and national level. The aim was simple, to
develop, inform and promote student talent. We aim to bring in diverse
talents from genres including guitar based, hip-hop, live drum and bass and
electronica.

The fantastic grand final at Brixton Academy in April was the stepping stone
for the return of this years’ event, which is launched on 16 October 2000.

In the search to find the most talented student musicians in the country, 48
shortlisted acts will perform to audiences all over the country. The best of
these acts at each event will compete in three further semi-finals for a
coveted place in this years’ final which will take place in May at
Manchester Academy.

Prizes
The of the event recieves an array of prizes that will help them hot foot
straight into the industry. They include:

Š Studio time at BBC Maida Vale and Abbey Road Studios
Š 100 CD samplers pressed from sessions
Š Membership of the PRS
Š Photoshoot

The Workshops

workshops, featuring a panel of industry veterans.

The workshops are supported by activate.co.uk, the careers and jobs website
for students and graduates. Their support will provide 16 key workshops
preceding the NSMA heats at selected Universities up and down the UK.

The panel speakers have been drawn from a wide spectrum of the music
industry and include many who have been involved with University Ents,
