There has been a lot of talk about the ineffectiveness of the
complaints and Visitorial procedures, but I have not had much
luck so far getting assistance from my student union or the NUS
legal services department. The NUS has said I must have
permission from my local SU rep before he can do anything to
help me, but the first rep did nothing and has now left the position,
and the new rep - well, is new to it and is starting from scratch in
trying to understand a complicated case.
I have been trying to find out what happens in cases where
supervision is withdrawn. I am a PhD student, and it seems
to me that the university has an obligation to provide supervision,
but my department has simply refused to deal with this issue. It
just says that my department will no longer provide supervision,
and that's that. As a direct consequence of that decision, the
Dean of the Graduate School has discontinued my studies.
But isn't there some contractual obligation here?
Has anybody any experience with these matters?
