Good to see Andy mentioning Juarroz, a poet I sometimes think we are the
only Brits to have heard of (thanks to our young US poet friend Cate
Marvin). Do other list members know his work? He doesn't help himself in
using the same title for all of his books - 'Vertical Poetry' - a name
which hints at Dr Williams' Bad Medicine, but he is an intermittently
astounding poet. Argentinian and 75 this year if he is (hopefully) still
with us and long exiled in California. Very much a poet who extends ideas
rather than language - he works with a limited vocabulary.
A little known poet who interests me is Ausias March (1397 - 1459), a
Catalan poet who was a warrior-knight. According to John Frederick Nims,
who translated some of his work, "his interests were hawking, women,
philosophy and poetry". His work is bustling, personal and strangely
modern. Does anyone know anything more about him?
And I had no response to my query about Voronka, the early C20 French poet.
I saw a fabulous poem by him on the Metro when in Paris recently, but can't
find anything about him. Any ideas?
Roddy
