Hi all,
I'm new to this list, but I've enjoyed reading several
of the archived discussions. Over the last couple
years, I've gradually become very interested in
reading and writing poetry. I haven't had any formal
poetry education--I've pretty much just randomly
pulled books off the poetry shelf at the library. As
I've done this, the poets who've most caught (and
who've continued to hold) my attention have been
writers like John Ashbery, Jorie Graham, James Tate
and Charles Simic, as well as some of their
predecessors like Wallace Stevens, William Carlos
Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, etc...
As I've worked on my own writing, I've found myself
wanting to connect with others who would have an at
least somewhat similar aesthetic perspective on
poetry. However, there don't seem to be many folks
like that in my neck of the woods, and most of what
I've been able to find on the web (personal websites,
bulletin boards, etc...) in relation to poetry has
been oriented toward what seem like rather
sentimental, religious and/or political poetic ideals,
none of which particularly interest me. I have found a
number of literary journals on the web that print
poems I like, but from what I've seen, these don't
really facilitate contact/discussion among aspiring
poets.
I've created my own website as one attempt at
connecting with others, but I'd be interested in
hearing any other suggestions you might have in this
regard (both in terms of online and offline
possibilities).
Thanks in advance,
David Pfaltzgraff-Carlson
