Well, I guess I've had more time than everyone as I got the *opening* of the
games and the *flame* - congrats to Cathy Freeman what a girl!
Hope this is good enough, Hugh and please note that the second line would be
in italics. Thanks for making me re-enjoy!

You can keep me in this state forever
opening of the Games of the XXVII Olympiad – for Cathy Freeman
you can keep me in this state forever
the first glint of fire on water
guardian-flames above the victory march
and high above the stadium walls
journeys will be won and lost;
it’s impossible to know
pain or joy at closing time
yet, sunburnt strains of jewel sea
rekindle Sydney’s happiest hour
what remains are memories
of silver mobiles sucking ground
rosy grins in cheeks of gold
a cavalry charge from Clancy’s overflow
a pumping dance of tapping rhythms
didgeridoos in rainbow sounds
two centuries rubbed into earth
with indigenous feet
a high-wire act, a floating sea
orchestral strings of liquefaction
stretching compassion’s plea
just a fraction of the scene, too much to know
too much to tell, except a walk on water
Cathy’s arm stretched to ignite
a hushed crowd that wait
for the major lift of cauldron flame
bringing with it her shining eyes to kindle
each lucid strain of victory stance
where history in this land of beauty
wide, blue seas
lies with the sprinter
Helen Hagemann
