Roddy asked:
"Regarding your thread title here David, and your former status as critic,
poet, academic and anthologist of Ye Olde Lande of Mainestreame, these
travels wouldn't have taken you via Damascus would they?"
There's such a lot to unpack here.
First, the title is just a play on Shelley.
Second, I have never been an academic although I am trying to become one
currently. I worked in various managerial jobs in manufacturing industry
from 1983 until redundancy last October. New century, new millennium, new
career.
Third, 'former status' - cripes, what am I and where am I now, I wonder? A
big fat zero in the big nowhere?
Fourth, well not exactly Damascus but I quickly came to realise after The
New Poetry that (a) I didn't know very much and that (b) I didn't like where
the so-called mainstream was headed, in particular Poetry Review's concerted
editorial campaign to trash innovation and invent something called 'the New
Plain Style'. So I began a major program of self-re-education. And, you
know, I found it wasn't the brown rice diet I was expecting.
cheers
David
