I agree with those defending Shakespeare's representation of women,
especially characters like Cleopatra. Not to mention the (boys as)girls as
boys in the comedies. But I would mention at least one other playwright:
Webster. The White Devil, & especially The Duchess of Malfi. Strong stuff.
And, boy, do I wish I could have been in London a few years back when Helen
Murren played the duchess...
