Camus points out in "The Rebel" that even a slave has the existential
freedom to refuse, an observation borne out my the slave Demby in _The
Autobiography of Frederick Douglas_, who chooses to be shot rather than
to be beaten again. Douglas himself refuses to be beaten by beating the
overseer.
