"The historical reach of male dominance is an interesting problem, rather as
the historical reach of what Derrida calls "logocentrism" is an interesting
problem. I don't know how to account for it."
R W Connell traces it to the rise of early capitalism in the mid-15th to
mid-17th centuries. He points to an increasing emphasis on what he terms
_the conjugal household_, on individualism, and on aview of both Western
civilisationand masculinity as distinguished by their rationality which
allowed the forging of_a cultural link between the legitimation of
patriarchy and the legitimation of empire_. He goes on to argue that
masculinity became_institutionalised_ in the form of_gendered work and power
in the counting house, the warehouse and the exchange_.
