Fred, you mean I HAVE to go look in Perth secondhand bookstores all day for
Hubbell? Well, so be it. I must attend my duties. (Shall I also look for
Fred Pollack?)
Andrew
Can I beg your indulgence for just a wee moment? A second hand bookstore story:
I was at BooksEtcetera one day last year when I came across a mint copy of
my book-before-last, Mother Waits for Father Late (FACP, 1993). Knowing it
was the owner's, Vincent's, birthday, I signed the front of the book with a
dedication to him, and went up to the counter.
"Listen, Vincent, I know it's your birthday today, your sixtieth, so I
brought you a copy of one of my books ..." And passed it over. He was
visibly touched. "Well, gee," he once was American, so he talks like that,
"I don't know what to ... That's very nice of you, I must say."
We chatted a little, and then I left. He thinks I'm a good bloke to this day.
Hee hee hee.
