Dear David,
Yes, Joel Oppenheimer was a poet and a very good poet. As you see, Gabe was
so carried away at the thought of him that he appears to have fallen off his
typing chair.
He was at Black Mountain; but his locale was NY. *Lots of poems about love.
Very sensual poems. He died in the late 80s. He wrote a poem about cancer
treatment which has been much copied....
Look at the Collected Later Poems. That was given to me as a present a few
years ago and it's one of my treasures. It's out on long term loan to a
reliable - or *this book would not have been lent - friend or I'd quote
you...
Any of it pretty well. Technically it's up and down like anyone's, though he
is one of the most successful poets I know, he brings it off often.... but
*all the poems give back something and often a lot
I recall the memorial poem for Zukovsky... and something quite simple, a
double haiku, in one of which a bird on the sidewalk looks like an old bag;
and in the other an old bag on the sidewalk that looks like a bird.
Simple titles. Clear language; but great sophistication of rhythm and tone
Look him up
Lawrence
