At amazon.co.uk there's a note on the new Empson Collected (reprint of the
blurb?) which says:
The volume also includes Empson's own notes, which he regarded as a vital
complement to the poetry: "there is a portentous air about compact verses
without notes," he remarked "like a seduction without conversation".
I'm not sure it's true, but couldn't the old boy make a phrase?
